Thanks to health care reform, an individual with a pre-existing condition is no longer uninsurable.

It doesn’t matter if you have diabetes, cardiovascular issues, an autoimmune disease, or a diagnosis of schizophrenia or mood disorder, your options are now much wider and affordable.

The 2008 financial meltdown was directly responsible for many people losing their jobs, and by now COBRA, if it was available to them, has run out. But you are no longer uninsurable. The rates will be a little higher, but not insanely so, and in 2014, you will not pay any additional premium for your pre-existing health issues.

The new legislation is not ideal, and will need some tweaking, but it does achieve basic protection for those of you who are vulnerable to bankruptcy due to existing health conditions, regardless of whether you are in remission or actively ill. We’ve been waiting for this a long time, and after 50 years of trying, have finally succeeded in providing a small level of  protection to persons in difficult medical circumstances.
