As a patient advocate, I’ve sometimes had to explain to clients that often a positive result from an early diagnostic will not change their medical regime. Additionally, many health issues in early stages either do not progress or, thanks to homeostasis or perhaps just the vagaries of life, sometimes self-resolve. Too much medical treatment is not a good thing.
There are exceptions, of course – cervical cancer is a prime example – but sometimes early detection accomplishes nothing but creating worry.
Striving for higher quality healthcare doesn’t necessarily mean undergoing more tests and/or treatment. Championing the cause of patient safety and optimum healthcare treatment does mean trusting your own intuition as a patient and being regarded as a valued medical team member whose expertise is you, the patient.
